Loudon, TN-based Fort Defiance Industries (FDI) is a growing engineering and manufacturing company. FDI is seeking a TIG Welder to support the production of existing products.


Position Summary:

The TIG Welder lays out, fits, and TIG welds steel and aluminum components to fabricate frames, pressure vessel, and miscellaneous assemblies according to company specifications performing the following job functions:




Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes and understands engineering drawings, specifications, and instructions

  • Fits and positions parts in accordance with drawing specification, positions and secures holding devices and tack welds as necessary

  • Prepares weld surfaces by cleaning, brushing, heating as appropriate for the application.

  • Sets up and operates metal arc welding equipment selecting appropriate

  • Sets current, gas pressures, and regulates pressure controls to obtain optimal arc and weld quality

  • Maintain proper torch angle and technique to optimize weld quality

  • Uses care to lay a smooth bead to obtain proper penetration and fusion, avoids burning or distortion of metal, detects defective material, unusual conditions or operating difficulties

  • Cleans and finishes weld surfaces as needed

  • Welds in multiple positions including flat, vertical or horizontal

  • Assists other welders in fitting and positioning parts

  • Maintains equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition

  • Maintains a continuous improvement mindset and seeks to incorporate best practices to improve weld quality and overall skill set.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Working Conditions

This work is performed in a manufacturing environment with occasional exposure to noise levels up to 110 decibels.  The job requires the ability to both sit and stand for long periods of time.  The employee will frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds.

  • Visualization:  The ability to imagine how something will look after it is moved around or when its parts are moved or rearranged.

  • Handling and Moving Objects:  The ability to using hands, arms and legs in handling, installing, positioning, lifting and moving materials/equipment – up to 50 lbs.

  • Performing General Physical Activities:  The ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
